A vengeful cowboy seeking justice loses his heart to a damsel-in-distress, but can the results of saving her outweigh their chance at love?
Kyle Darby doesn’t want to be a lonely ranch hand forever. If he can help his cousin run a ranch, his chances at future foreman will be drastically increased. But his need to find revenge for his sister clouds his logic.
Sherri isn’t into dating or anything normal – she studies bugs for crying out loud. When Kyle rescues her one night at a bar, she finds it hard to believe his continued interest is sincere. Used to saving herself and her heart, Sherri has to accept that sometimes she needs help.
With her life hanging in the balance, Sherri has to learn to rely on someone else – Kyle.
Can she do it without losing her heart? Or are they both destined to just be along for the ride?
Disclosure: I received a copy of Unbridled Trails in exchange for an honest and fair review.
If you daydream about cowboys and life out west, where danger and romance can be found among the twists and turns of mountain trails, you might want to look into the Montana Trails Series. I was given the chance to read the third book, Unbridled Trails, and was pleasantly surprised to find unconventional, likable characters that added an interesting spin to the western romance genre.
Sherri, the heroine of the story, is just settling back into her sleepy town after taking a job studying Western Pine Beetles, whose presence strongly correlate to devastating wildfires. Female entomologists aren’t common in her neck of the woods, but she’s used to being the outsider, never noticed and certainly never romanced. Then, along comes Kyle.
Kyle, preoccupied with getting revenge for a crime committed against his little sister, Ruby, isn’t in the market for love either. His days are spent working on a ranch and his nights keeping an eye on the man who hurt Ruby. When he catches the beast in the act at a local bar, saving headstrong Sherri changes everything. Why can’t he get her off his mind?
While Unbridled Trails stood on its own two feet, I wish that I’d read the previous two books first. As the story progresses and Sherri and Kyle interact with other characters, I found it a little hard to connect with them, because their stories and personalities were fleshed out in the earlier installments.
That being said, I don’t feel like starting on book three really stole from Sherri and Kyle’s story. The ups and downs of their budding romance are relatable to anyone who’s rode the rocky, uncertain terrain that is dating. They’re both hopeful but guarded, and getting together isn’t a smooth journey. I laughed out loud when Kyle was preparing for his first date, and couldn’t wait to watch that scenario play out. Reading is beautiful, because it’s always awesome to be a fly on the wall during those extremely awkward moments.
When you’re in the mood for some cozy western romance, pick up the Montana Trails Series. Cowboys and romance await.
