Wellness Wednesday: The Benefits of Pet Companions

Roll over Tuesday, because “Wellness Wednesday” is going to the dogs.

Today we walk away from the typical post to focus on our furry friends. You heard me right! Today is all about Fido (or Fifi, we don’t discriminate), and the benefits that come with caring for and loving a pet!

Not only do pets provide you with affection, companionship, love and understanding 24/7, they’re also mentally and physically beneficial to your health.

Having a furry baby not only lowers your blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, but it gives you a reason to burn some calories and spend time with other people. Whether you’re walking little Skippy or he’s walking you (Who doesn’t like to be dragged around the neighborhood?!), you get a chance to meet people, like the new mom down the street (especially if he drops a conversation piece on her lawn) or other neighborhood dog lovers.

Because caring for pets lowers blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, they are excellent for individuals who have survived heart attacks or are working to avoid them. In fact, having a pet actually raises your odds of heart attack survival from 1 in 87 to 1 in 15. Amazing right?!

Further, studies show that those with pets get sick less frequently and recover more quickly from an illness. And, overall, those individuals spend less time in the hospital than pet-free folks.

Just having your fuzzy companion with you has been known to lower stress levels greatly, and being a mom of three rambunctious kids, I completely understand how priceless that is.

High amounts of stress can lead to decreased productivity, frequent insomnia, headaches and overeating. Stress can also boost your risks of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity. So, when you’re overwhelmed, head for your best friend and give her a big hug! You’ll both feel better for it.

Not only is having a pet beneficial for you, but it benefits your children as well. Recent studies actually show that infants and children who grow up in homes with pets are less likely to develop allergies and asthma.

Sounds crazy, right?

The proof is in the pudding. One study done in households that had animals with fur, such as cats and dogs, showed evidence that infants were less likely to develop eczema and pet allergies. Further, those children born into a home with animals had stronger immune systems.

With all the amazing information out there about animals and their benefits to your health and life, why not consider having a loving family pet? There are many wonderful animals just waiting for a home at your local animal shelter!

Can I get a paw up?

Wellness Wednesday: Getting Healthy as a Couple

healthy couple
Health and wellness don’t have to be stand alone tasks. In fact, couples who partner together to better their healths also better their odds of sticking to a program. They continually build strength when relying on one another for support!

I’m not talking about starting a crash diet together. It is rare that they ever work long term. In fact, with crash dieting you feel almost relieved to revert back to poor habits, but by taking your time and making small changes here and there you increase your odds of getting healthy, losing weight and keeping it off for good. Working together as accountability buddies is one way to further increase your odds of reaching your goals!

Start your health-seeking adventure by charting out your health goals, and writing a few paragraphs on what your life will be like together when you’ve met them all. This will help to remind you both why it is important to stick to the task at hand! Talk about past attempts and what you can do as a couple to better your odds of sticking to a program together this time around.

Changing your habits has to be a gradual thing, so begin with simple steps such as drinking eight (8 ounce) glasses of water for the first two weeks. Then, take the next step by walking three to five days a week. This will give you a common goal as well as bonding time. Let’s face it, ladies, any excuse to walk hand in hand is a good one, so why not better your healths at the same time!

Even something as simple as making time to prepare one healthy meal a day together  gives you more time just to chat and feel closer to one another while you’re making a nutritious meal for your bodies. Sure, your sparkling conversation may be over a head of lettuce, but having children means making the most of every little moment!

There are multiple benefits to getting healthy as a couple, outside of just bonding with one another. Your children will notice the changes, too. The odds of them making better, healthier choices because they want to emulate their parents is a good one. Sure, they may not take to eating their veggies the first time around, but after awhile of seeing their dad and mom eating them they may just come to like the crunchy goodness of a carrot!

Also, getting healthy together leads to higher self-esteem and increases your energy levels. Feeling better about yourself and your body leads to more intimacy in the bedroom. Mega aces!

So, this Father’s Day week, I encourage you not to just celebrate dad, but celebrate one another as a couple. Find strength and support in each other while getting fit and healthy together.

Welcome to Wellness Wednesday!

I’ve been concentrating on my health lately in order to feel better, get centered and enjoy life more. I have to admit that this isn’t just a solo effort. My sister-in-law and very close friend, Amy (of the Flair Yourself Friday beauty blogs), and I have been working together for the benefits of ourselves, each other and our families.

We’re so excited about all the positive changes in our lives, we just have to share. Getting healthy has some really cool side effects, such as:

  • Extra energy
  • Deeper, more restful sleep
  • Positive, upbeat attitude
  • Sharper, clearer thought
  • Stronger muscles
  • Trimmer waistlines
  • Boosted metabolism
  • Beautiful skin

This, of course, is a short list of the fabulous benefits of working on your personal health. The bottom line is, our bodies just function better and we have more to offer when we take time out to care for ourselves.

Taking care of yourself shouldn’t just be put on the back burner. So, in our new weekly feature called “Wellness Wednesday” we would like to focus on simple things you can do to better your health and self-awareness. Our mission is simple, share the health wealth and feel goody vibes with Mama’s Got Flair readers.

Some of the topics we’re eager to cover are:

  • The benefits of drinking plenty of water
  • Healthy, but tasty recipes
  • Simple, but beneficial exercises
  • Cool health-related products
  • Online resource that will rock your socks
  • Books you don’t want to miss
  • Anything that can help you get on the right track to a happier healthier you!

We won’t be just giving this advice, but we’ll be sharing it from the perspective of two, everyday busy moms who aren’t just writing it, we’re living it ourselves!

We would like to officially invite you along on our journey to being fit, healthy, happy mamas!
