Flair Yourself Friday: Simple Highlighting Tip for a Youthful Look

Hello ladies! Welcome to another exciting addition to

Flair Yourself Friday!

white eyeshadow

After last Friday’s elaborate post on brow care, I thought it would be fun to focus on something more simple, facial highlights! It’s a small step in your makeup routine that can make a huge difference!

Going from my twenties into my thirties, I’ve noticed I can’t wear my makeup in the manner I use to. Certain techniques that were once a regular part of my makeup routine, now make me look older and draw attention to the fine lines that have begun to form on my face, so I am always on the look out for new tricks to help make me appear more youthful.

While watching one of my all-time favorite makeover shows, I learned about facial highlights. I was thrilled to say the least and immediately went out to purchase the few simple tools I would need to do this at home on my own.

Before you begin, you’ll need either a highlighter pencil or a white eyeshadow and smaller eyeshadow brush. Also when picking out your eyeshadow color, you can buy one with a hint of shimmer to help catch the light.

Ready? It’s simple!

After going through your normal makeup routine, simply apply your highlighter pencil or eyeshadow on a brush (see illustration):

  1. Under your browsfacial highlights
  2. In the corners of your eyes, near your tear ducts
  3. Starting a centimeter above your brows in a backwards ‘C’ just above the apples of your cheeks.

Then, gently blend, so you don’t remove all the powder, but keeping the color soft. You still want enough shadow left to catch the light.

Voilà! A much more youthful look without the assistance of a doctor!

Stay tuned, because next Friday we’ll be focusing on skin care. Inexpensive tips and tricks that will make any mama’s skin look like a million bucks!

Flair Yourself Friday: Cleaning Up Your Eyebrows

Welcome to another exciting addition of “Flair Yourself Friday!”

eyebrow

Eyebrows, the crowning glory on every woman’s face!

They’re one of your most important facial features. With clean, well-shaped brows, your face will look more polished and you, too, can rock it with flair!

Before we begin, here are a few tools of the trade you’ll need to get started.

  • Good pair of tweezers
  • Brow pencil (matched to your hair color for a more natural look)
  • Brow brush
  • Mini scissors (typically found in the manicure aisle of the beauty department)

Important: Keep in mind, it’s better to tweeze a little hair at a time, because most of the brow hair you’ll remove either won’t grow back the same, or at all. Also, have a clear idea of what shape you are trying to create. If you want a better idea of what shape you’ll like, most stores typically sell eyebrow stencils in the beauty department, which can be very helpful to first timers. No two brows are the same, but with a little patience and effort you can make both brows as similar as possible.

Here are some basics before getting started. (See the illustration with corresponding numbers.)

  1. Taking your brow pencil, and holding the unsharpened end of the pencil over the eyebrow groomingright nostril, angle the tip of the pencil to the right side of your forehead. Make a mark. Then do the same for the left side of your face. Only the hairs after those marks are to be removed when you start to tweeze.
  2. On each side, take your pencil and holding it from your nostril to the start of your brow above your nose make a mark. Only hairs before this mark will be removed when you begin the tweezing process.
  3. Your arch is to be two thirds of the way from your inner eyebrow.

Let’s begin:

  1. Before plucking, take your brow brush, and brush your eyebrows upward, starting at the inner corner.
  2. With your brow pencil, draw over your eyebrow the shape you have chosen. Make sure both brows are symmetrical.
  3. Then, brush down the hairs you wish to remove with your brow brush.
  4. Begin by plucking the hairs outside of the brow line you drew. Pull the hairs out with the tweezers from as close to the root as possible, in the direction that they grow, using sharp swift movements.
  5. When you’ve finished plucking, use your brow brush to brush them into shape.
  6. If the hairs are considerably long, take your brow brush and brush them up towards the shape line at the top of your brow and nip the tips with your mini scissors. Be careful not to over trim.
  7. You can fill in any natural gaps and make your brows more symmetrical using your brow pencil. When drawing in your brows start from the inside edge and gently do a feathering motion for a more natural look.
  8. Finally, gently run your brow brush through your eyebrows to blend in the brow pencil.

Now, you know the eyebrow basics!

Bonus tip: To soothe soreness after plucking, apply a warm, damp washcloth to your brows.

Stay tuned next week when we learn about how to add highlights to your brows and face for a fresh and youthful look.

Flair Yourself Friday: Beauty for Every Mama

With the great response to my Birthday Bash Makeover Series…which has barely even started…it became overwhelmingly clear, that there are many women, like my sister and me, who are aching to know more about beauty, style and just feeling good about themselves.

My sister-in-law, Amy, and I agree that beauty is individual and every woman deserves to feel wonderful in her own skin. After talking about it at length, we’ve decided to start a new feature, devoted to feeling beautiful, inside and out. And so, “Flair Yourself Friday: Beauty for Every Mama” has come to be.

Amy has graciously agreed to share a wealth of beauty tips and tricks from applying cosmetics and pampering your tootsies to eating foods that help your skin and exercises to tone all the wonderful parts that make you beautifully you.

I’m extremely excited and honored to have her on board, and will be learning right along with you all. Thank you so much, Amy.

And now, our resident beauty expert, Amy Arias…

flair yourself

Hello readers!

I am so exited to be doing a guest post for Mama’s Got Flair’s “Flair Yourself Friday.”

In this first post, I want to take a moment to give you my view point on beauty and womanhood.

As some of you may know from reading Jessi’s last post, I was blessed with the opportunity to grow up around certified cosmetologists. I know not every woman gets to have that experience, so I am here to pass along my knowledge to all you lovely ladies out there.

There was much I picked up from the women in my family, and I continuted to learn a lot on my own over the years, too. One lesson that I hold nearest to my heart is: All women are different, and it’s their uniqueness that is their true beauty. It truly saddens me that that is not the lesson that most women are taught.

I, myself, have felt the pressures of most popular magazines telling me I must weigh a certain amount, like a certain style, or do my hair in a specific way to be beautiful, but I never felt truly gorgeous until I learned to except myself and embrace what makes me feel glamourous.

Beauty is about experimentation. Sometimes it goes well and other times you find you didn’t like something you thought you would. Beauty is also about surrounding yourself with positive people who appreciate you and all your qualities, so that you as a person can grow. Beauty is not an age or a certain size, but a feeling that comes from looking in the mirror and loving yourself.

As a woman, there are many fun tips and tricks you can add to your daily routine to put a little extra pep in your step. I can’t wait to get started teaching you all I know and have learned. I’m also excited to keep learning new stuff along the way, so we can all benefit from it.

So, let us embrace womanhood together, and celebrate what makes us each uniquely beautiful Mama’sGotFlair-style.

Beauty Birthday Bash, Part 1: Background on the Arias Sisterhood

On Saturday, I wrote a post before I left for my brother and sister-in-law’s house. I was heading there for what I only knew to be a girly makeover day with my sisters. Beyond that, they were very sketchy about the details. I was given specific instructions of what to bring and the rest would be “taken care of.”

As a little background, I grew up learning very little by way of beauty tips. My mom is a strong, beautiful, independent woman, and she concentrated her life lessons more on inner beauty and seeing the wonderful, beautiful qualities in other people. We weren’t a Cosmo magazine crowd, and that was fine with me.

Still, part of me longed to know how to apply makeup, do my hair and really play up my best physical features in a way that made feel pretty. Every girl wants to feel pretty. Right?

Stephanie and Amy: My Sisters

This is where my sisters come in. My younger sister, Stephanie, has always been more adventurous with trying new hairstyles and makeup techniques than I’ve ever been. She’s a gorgeous young woman and has always had a flair for style. She, however, was in the same boat I was when it came to simple tricks and tips that every gal should know.

And then along came an angel. My sister-in-law, Amy, knows what she’s doing when it comes to makeup and hair. Not only was she raised with certified cosmetologists in the family, but she watches shows and reads magazines that keep her up-to-date on the latest trends and tips. She also has a natural eye for beauty and fashion that I just wasn’t blessed with.

Amy helped Stephanie prepare for her wedding, and took it a few steps further a couple weeks ago with a full day of beauty. Stephanie learned so much and felt so wonderful, beautiful and confident after her makeover, that they decided they would do the same for me.

They went all out.

I arrived to baskets of gifts, filled with everything I would need from simple supplies like tweezers and cleansing products to a complete set of hair care products, makeup and even a hair straightening iron and new clothes! Then throughout one magnificent, laughter-filled day, they showed me how to use all of it…the right way.

The day was epic and the transformation was radical. I’ve never felt so special and beautiful in my life. Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing this adventure with all of you.

Stay tuned for the next post in this series: Beauty Birthday Bash, Part 2: Bye Bye Unibrow. You won’t want to miss it.
