Flair Yourself Friday: Finding Your Face Shape

Measuring tape...hare...get it? Ahhh...never mind.

Face shapes are important when planning your hairstyle. You want your hair to flatter your face! Over the course of the next eight weeks of “Flair Yourself Friday,” I would like to focus on the seven various face shapes, hair types and what style of haircut is ideal for each one.

Here are some of the basics to getting started finding what hairstyle is right for you by determining your hair type and face shape!

So what is your face shape and how do you determine that?

Grab your tape measures, a pen and piece of scratch paper, ladies, ’cause the numbers don’t lie.

  1. Measure the width of your face at the top of your cheekbones
  2. Measure your jawline starting from the widest point
  3. Starting from the widest part of your forehead, measure your forehead across. The widest point of your forehead can usually be found approximately halfway between your eyebrows and hairline
  4. Take the measurements of the length of your face from your chin to the tip of your hairline

Determining your face shape:
Diamond: If your face measures the widest at your cheekbones than diamond is your face shape.

Heart: If you are wide at your cheek bones and forehead, but have a narrow jaw line then you have a heart-shaped face.

Oval: If your face length is one and a half times the width of your face then oval is your face shape.

Rectangle: If the length of your face is greater than the width and your jawline, forehead and cheekbones measure similarly, then you are rectangle.

Round: If the length and width of your face is the same, or close to the same, then your face is round.

Square: If you have a strong, angular jawline, and the length of your face is the same, or close to, the width of your face then your face is square.

Triangular: If your face is narrow at the temples and wide at the jaw bone then your face shape is triangular.

The other consideration when choosing your ideal hairstyle is your hair type? Is it curly, kinky, straight or wavy? This is important to how you will get your hair cut obviously, but besides your hair type you must also determine the texture of your hair, be it fine, medium, or thick!

With this information in hand we can begin to study each face type and what style is best for you! See you next Friday when we focus on the diamond face shape!
