Best Served Cold by Tawdra Kandle Book Review

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Every girl’s got that guy. You know, the one who trampled on her heart and walked away like the relationship meant nothing? Yeah. That guy. Grrr. That guy.

At the opening of Best Served Cold, Julia’s 10 month relationship comes to a crushing halt, not only unexpectedly, but in a painfully public and humiliating way. Besides the sadness over her loss, she finds herself constantly surrounded by whispers and giggles everywhere she goes on her small college campus. It’s not long before heartbreak is trumped by a burning desire for revenge. When she enlists the help of a few friends, some not even knowing what they’re really getting into, she’s quickly caught up in a complicated plot to teach ex-boyfriend Liam a lesson about messing with ladies’ hearts. What she doesn’t count on is meeting Jesse and the decision to choose love or dish out some payback, best served cold.

Loved, loved, loved this book. There’s no way to read it without being instantly transported to the dorm days of college and all the ups and downs of early adulthood. Julia, her pals and their experiences are written so beautifully and realistically it’s like reading her journal. I really liked how author Tawdra Kandle used Julia’s memories to connect the reader with her character. In the moment. In the emotion. Relating to what was driving her was easy and felt personal.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the nods to Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer that were laced throughout the book, some obvious, some only a true Buffy geek would even notice, like “the hotness of you.” I’m one such geek. Good fun.

I recommend Best Served Cold to anyone who loves YA romance novels with a twist of revenge. The book is fun, well written and oh so relatable.
