Author Extra: Geocaching in “Cache a Predator”

Geocaching in “Cache a Predator”

by M. Weidenbenner

How many of you know what geocaching is?

Here’s Wikipedia’s definition: “Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches”, anywhere in the world.
A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name.”

A writer friend suggested I write a novel that included this sport, so when I researched geocaching I decided my villain would plant a body part in these boxes.

But who would do this and why?

What if it was a person with a vendetta against pedophiles? Nobody likes sex-offenders, right? Perfect. So I created my villain’s backstory, a story of child abuse which readers will find heartbreaking, a story that validates the reasons to target pedophiles, to render them unable to harm children. And since my villain likes to play games, hiding the body part in geocaching sites became the perfect solution.

CACHE a PREDATOR is a story of a father’s love for his daughter and his quest to gain custody of her, but first he must convince a judge, CPS, and the deranged vigilante that he’s a loving father.

The pedophile issue might sound gross, but millions of people are affected by sexual abuse every day. Herbert Ward said, “Child abuse casts a shadow the length of a lifetime.”

J. David Core, a reviewer, said, “Cache a Predator is a thrilling procedural with all of the bells and whistles: a child at risk, a friendly dog, a beautiful and intelligent foil/love interest for the protagonist, tons of interpersonal relationships, and enough well-thought-out gimmicks to make the Sky Mall Catalog jealous. The title, for example, is not a misspelled reference to Chris Hansen’s willful entrapment specials. Rather, it is a pun playing on the idea that the serial mutilator has a plot-device of hiding his or her severed trophies in geocaching treasure boxes for hapless hikers to accidentally discover.”

About the Author

Michelle is a fulltime employee of God’s kingdom, writing and encouraging writers every day. She’s often a sucker for emotional stories, her sensitive side fueling the passion for her character’s plights, often giving her the ability to show readers the “other” side of the story.

She grew up in the burbs of Detroit with five brothers. No sisters. Each time her mom brought the boy bundle home from the hospital Michelle cried, certain her mom liked boys better than girls. But when her brothers pitched in with the cooking, cleaning, and babysitting—without drama, Michelle discovered having brothers wasn’t so bad. They even taught her how to take direct criticism without flinching, which might come in handy with book reviews.

Michelle is living her dream—writing every day and thanking God for the stories He puts in her path. When Michelle isn’t writing she’s winning ugly on the tennis court. She’s known as “Queen of the Rim Shots.” No joke. It’s ugly.
