My 2012 Mission: Redecorating on a TIGHT Budget

Over the last couple of months, I’ve been trying to organize my home and get things the way that I want. I loved how it was decorated before my children were born, but as they each hit the toddler stage, more and more of my decorations wound up boxed and in the attic, and because my house isn’t flush with closets and built in storage spaces, things got put up and crammed into any place they’d be out of the reach of little hands.

Now that my kids are getting older and understand when and why I say no, I’m feeling freer to transform my house from the skeleton it had become into a cozy home that we can enjoy.

I’m still working on organization bit by bit, but the worst of it is over. Now I’m turning my sights toward decorating. I still have quite a few things in the attic, but over the course of the last few years, we’ve acquired furniture that doesn’t quite go with the old stuff. Besides, as I’ve left my twenties and embraced my thirties, my style has changed quite a bit. Out with the old, in with the new.

While I’m totally stoked about getting started on redecorating, I still have to be mindful of my budget, which for this sort of thing is pretty close to zilch. So, I’ve asked my husband if we can rework our household budget to allow me $20-$30 every two weeks, to start working on fixing things up for a comfortable new look we can be proud of.

I know that this doesn’t sound like a lot of money, but my plan is to find as much as I can at thrift stores, garage sales and on clearance. Not only will being thrifty about my project save us money, but I know I’ll be more selective when making purchases, and it will be an awesomely sweet challenge for the year.

I’m hoping to transform my home from drab to fab as inexpensively as possible by the end of the year. Top to bottom. It will test my budget pinching skills and force me to try new things, like reupholstering and repurposing items.

Do you have any decorating on a budget tips for me? What was your best cheap find or deal? If you have a link to a post, please share it in the comments.
