Tips for Making Healthier Choices During the Holidays

It’s that time of year when we rejoice in seeing those that we care about and celebrating the holidays, but also a dreaded time for many of us as we picture our waistlines growing from the holiday goodies that seem to get the best of us. There is no need to fear; with a few tips, you can still enjoy those cherished events without going overboard on the tasty treats!

Make healthier choices! At many events you will be grateful to find things like fruit or veggie trays, mixed nuts or meat and cheese platters. Try to fill up more on the healthy options, such as these, when nom nom noming at the party. Also, go for the water, or if having an alcoholic beverage, look for the red wine–which is high in antioxidants that are good for you! One glass of red wine is beneficial as long as you don’t go overboard.

Stick to portions! No, you don’t need a measuring cup for the party, but you can eyeball a serving, such as a small handful of nuts or a serving of meat about the size of a deck of cards, etc. You can have the goodies in this fashion without going overboard and feeling bad later down the road. You don’t always even need a full portion. Sometimes a taste is enough to satisfy the craving, especially if you are given many options, which most parties do.

Bring your own. At many parties guests tend to bring a food tray or bottle of wine. If you want to be certain that there is something on the menu that won’t add to your waistline, bring a tray of something healthy–and that you love–to share with everyone. That way you know there is one healthy option there that you can have.

Make sure to have your healthy meal(s) before a gathering. If you know the party is later that night, or in the afternoon, make sure to make your meals beforehand healthy ones. Not only will you not be completely famished by the time you make it to the party, which can lead to over-indulging, but then if you do splurge a little later that night, you have had most your day filled with completely balanced meals.

With these tips and tricks in mind, you can still have a wonderful time celebrating with those you love while making healthy choices and also treating yourself in the process!
