It’s been a long time since my tween days. In fact, the term “tween” hadn’t even been coined yet. And though it’s been a couple decades, those tender years are still vivid in my memory.
The tween years are full of mystery and confusion, especially for young ladies. They’re caught between pigtails and prom dresses. There’s just a whole mess of personal evolution going on. It’s more important than ever to feel connected to other girls who are experiencing the same journey.
That’s what’s great about Discovery Girls Magazine. It’s perfect for the tween age group because, it’s focused specifically on the interests of preteen girls, with all the goodies that little chicks are curious about.

I had the pleasure of reading through an issue of Discovery Girls as well the 10 Year Collector’s Addition and a copy of the Discovery Girl’s book, Fab Girls Guide to Friendship Hardship.
What I love…

The thing that I loved about the Discovery Girls Magazine and book is that they were written at age-appropriate levels for the preteen crowd. A mom can feel good about the articles and information that her daughters are reading.
Unlike Discovery Girls, magazines geared towards teens are often a tad too spicy for young ladies, ages 8 to 13. What’s appropriate for a 17-year-old is often too mature for a 9-year-old. There’s plenty of time for that awesomesauce in high school.
The secret to Discovery Girl’s perfect voice? It’s written by girls, for girls. Isn’t that just simple and brilliant? Who better to understand your thoughts and questions than a group of your peers?
And as if the magazine wasn’t impressive enough, the book, Friendship Hardship, was a fantastic read, filled with great advice on some of the pressing issues surrounding the all-to-familiar ups and downs of preteen friendships. (All the moms take a second to shudder at the memories…you know exactly what I’m talking about.)

The book discusses everything from cliques and popularity to how a young lady can put her best foot forward and patch up misunderstandings. The format is easy to read and full of great thoughts and advice for tweens. And honestly, the reminders weren’t too shabby for a 30-something gal like myself, either.
I’d definitely recommend Discovery Girls Magazine and the Fab Girls book collection to moms of tween girls. The articles and advice offered were interesting, engaging and thoughtfully written…without sounding too young or being too sophisticated for the age range.

Not sure who gave me the best piece of advice, because I wasn’t great at listening back then.

I think the best advice I received as a tween was from my dance teacher to just be myself. No need in trying to impress others or do things because the “cool kids” are doing it – just be me!

My best friend gave the best advice (altho her actions spoke louder than any words ever could, which is why we are still friends all these years later!). But one day she said “Just be honest with me”. With honesty, you can make it thru any difficult times!

I would love to win this for my daughters. The best advice I got was from my mom. “You wouldn’t worry about what others thought about you if you knew how seldom they did.” I tell my girls that all the time now to not get hung up on worrying about what others are thinking.

The best friendship advice from my tween years would have to have come from my aunt!

One day at school I had a first-grade crush on this boy. A girl also liked him and she would push me and run ahead to make sure she got to sit next to him. My mom told me that a real friend would never do anything to hurt you on purpose and anyone who does that isn’t a real friend. I now decide who is a friend by that same advice. I also got the boy in first grade. He was my first “kiss”. It didn’t last very lng though. Our relationship ended by recess the next day. lol
